About

SBA Research is the research center for information security in Austria.

SBA Research was founded in 2006 as the first Austrian research center for information security by the TU Wien, the Graz University of Technology and the University of Vienna. The Vienna University of Economics and Business, the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology and the University of Applied Sciences St. Pölten joined as academic partners among others.

Through scientific research of information security we develop practical and applicable solutions, while focusing on current issues like cyber security. SBA Research employs more than 130 people and is by now the largest research center in Austria which exclusively addresses information security. The center is part of the Austrian program FFG COMET (Competence Centers for Excellent Technologies).

Applied Research – Applied Knowledge

Research @ SBA Research

Protection for Information Processing
SBA Research researches and develops solutions in information security. Information security protects IT infrastructure and data against damages done by persons or events. Thereby the results of fundamental research are the basis for applied research and development.

Expertise through Research
The experts of SBA Research are continuously publishing articles in top journals like Computers & Security and ACM Transactions on Information and System Security. At conferences worldwide SBA Research contributes to the know-how of information security by asking fundamental questions and presenting answers which create a crucial advantage for the development of applied Solutions. An Important Partner in International Security Research
SBA Research has built an interdisciplinary Network and has established itself as an innovative and reliable scientific partner. SBA Research is active in numerous international and
national research projects – e.g. KIRAS, FWF, Bridge, H2020 – and works closely with renowned research institutions from all over the world. These academic networks facilitate research on the highest level.

Networks for Experts
SBA Research intensively builds networks and contributes to numerous platforms, e.g. IEEE SMC Austria, ACM SIGSAC Vienna, IFIP WG 8.4, (ISC)2 Chapter Austria. Memberships at many other platforms (Austrian Standards, ERCIM, EU-COST Actions) facilitate a constant knowledge exchange with experts from academia and industry both home and abroad. Young academics – from bachelor to post-doc – are furthered via summer schools and exchange programs and thus integrated in the existing networks. In addition, SBA Research organizes numerous conferences worldwide.  It is a goal to bring top conferences to Austria and strengthen our country as a scientific location.

A bridge between Science and Industry

Providing IT Decision Makers with Research Results
IT security research should yield a high benefit in practice as well as relevant fundamental research. Jointly with partners and clients solutions are developed which meet scientific, economic and political requirements. During numerous projects and cooperations concrete problems are addressed and new product ideas developed. Scientific results become industry- and topic-relevant solutions from which company partners benefit directly. Professional Services @ SBA Research

Boosting Awareness
Information security depends upon people who are able to use the “IT tool” properly. Therefore, raising awareness is crucial and actively supported by SBA Research. Awareness trainings take place at various events in form of interesting and entertaining talks and workshops. Thereby we want to strengthen the information security awareness of kids, teens and adults alike.

Assuming Social Responsibility
SBA Research, being a nonprofit and forward-looking research institution, is assuming social responsibility for Austria’s information security. Therefore study results are not only published in academia, but are provided on other platforms for purposes of information, exchange and development.

Female Researchers in Information Security Research
In Austria, the share of female researchers in the field of information security is extremely low. Our center therefore actively furthers female scientists and supports initiatives and activities which aim to inspire young women to pursue a career in information security.

The Accelerator Program: Advancement of Start-Ups
Since 2015 SBA Research offers an accelerator program. It is designed for young entrepreneurs who strive to develop and provide innovative IT security products and services. As accelerator we provide a portfolio of supporting measures to facilitate the booster phase and accelerate the development process. Long-standing scientific research and numerous industry contacts in the DACH countries enable SBA Research to consult on technical-scientific as well as economic questions and facilitate the market entry for young enterprises.
