Abstract
The public expects immediate clarity in crisis situations, which is an enormous burden for scientists. Good scientists provide differentiated answers that are often not communicated, as science does not lead to universally valid results but is based on correcting errors, improving data and replication. Complex issues in particular require a variety of scientific disciplines, which would require bringing together different areas of expertise. Science is often forced into an inappropriate role, as mistakes are perceived as a weakness in politics and the media. Politicians and the media also tend to take note of scientific statements that support their own views and do not reflect them critically. In addition, competitive pressure, bureaucracy and problematic incentive systems lead to a loss of quality in science and an increase in misconduct.
