Recap Day 3, 4 and 5: LION16 – The 16th Learning and Intelligent Optimization Conference
The third day started with numerous gripping talks and continued with the interesting tutorial by Prof. Yaroslav D. Sergeyev from the University of Calabria about numerical infinities and infinitesimals in optimization. The most efficient and determined participants of the combinatorial testing game from the day before were provided with a gift by the MATRIS Research Group of SBA Research.
On the fourth day of the conference, Thursday, an engaging and intriguing tutorial on the future of disaster management and research was given by the Senior Researchers and the Lead of MATRIS Research Group, Bernhard Garn, Klaus Kieseberg, and Dimitris E. Simos. The tutorial was an immense success and gripped the attention of various participants as it aimed at encouraging an interdisciplinary approach and work on disaster management research. Consequently, the tutorial attracted even more attention to the MATRIS booth. The fourth day continued with another significant tutorial by Prof. Mario Rosario Guarracino from the University of Cassino on a random generator of hypergraphs ensembles. After the end of the fourth conference day, many participants joined the conference excursion to visit the gorgeous spots the beautiful Greek island has to offer.
The fifth and final day of the conference started with the speech of the honorable Mayor of Milos island, Manos Mikelis, as he greeted the participants. Thereafter, the most awaited moment came as the plenary talk was given by the Knuth Prize, Gödel, IEEE’s John von Neumann Medal, the EATCS Award, and the IEEE Computer Society Charles Babbage Award holder Prof. Christos Papadimitriou of Columbia University. Prof. Papadimitriou focused on the question of how our minds do emerge from our brain.
As the last day of the conference ended, participants met for the last time at the conference dinner on the beautiful Greek island, Milos, to exchange ideas and to have research-oriented dialogues over tasty traditional Greek food.
About LION
The LION conference explores the intersections and uncharted territories between machine learning, artificial intelligence, energy, mathematical programming and algorithms for hard optimization problems. The main purpose of the event is to bring together experts from these areas to discuss new ideas and methods, challenges and opportunities in various application areas, general trends and specific developments.
