Yvonne Kemper, post-doc at the University of Vienna, is giving a talk about “Matroids: from h-Vectors to Shellable Complexes”.

Abstract: Matroids are fascinating objects that bring together ideas from linear algebra, graph theory, computer science, and more.  Though they appear in a great many contexts, and demonstrate a great deal of structure, there are many things about them we do not know.  In this talk, I discuss one open conjecture, the variety of techniques and perspectives that have been used to approach the problem, and our particular methods and results so far.  I will not assume prior experience with matroids; the talk will be friendly and generally accessible.

Bio: Yvonne Kemper is a post-doc at the University of Vienna in the Faculty for Mathematics.  Before moving to Vienna, she completed her doctoral work at the University of California, Davis, and spent two years in Washington, DC working at the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
