Abstract
Anyone who wants to become a scientist must overcome many hurdles. The first challenges await young people aspiring to this profession even before they successfully complete their university studies. In Austria, where education is still strongly inherited, those born into an academic environment have better starting conditions. However, attending a prestigious school and graduating with top grades from an elite university is still no guarantee of a job in academia. Curiosity, adaptability, self-discipline, perseverance, and teamwork are essential virtues. Additionally, continuous networking and self-marketing improve career prospects, even in the scientific field. But in the end, do the most suitable minds always end up at universities and private research institutions?
